Night on the Highway

My first composition written in America. In late January 1991, I took a Greyhound bus trip from New York to Wisconsin via Chicago. Somewhere after Ohio in the middle of the night, the bus picked up speed and for several hours raced along a snowy, deserted highway, and that’s when it hit me… An incredible state of joy, anxiety, freedom, eeriness, something otherworldly. And very American. I’ve never experienced anything like this in any other country…

The composition took shape by mid-spring 1991. I love it and perform it at almost every concert. It’s like a bridge between worlds…
